Research to explore and understand sensitivity

As a research lab, we focus on several key research themes. See below for an overview, and some highlighted projects

Sensitivity: Concept and assessment

We develop and refine theoretical accounts and assessment tools for environmental sensitivity, including validated, open-access questionnaires for children and adults that support both research and practice.

Sensitivity, mental health and neurodevelopment

We examine how sensitivity relates to mental health and neurodevelopment, adopting a dimensional and strengths-informed perspective.

Sub-themes include:

  • Sensitivity and mental health: Understanding when sensitivity confers susceptibility to positive and negative outcomes, and how it relates to mental health and well-being in different environmental contexts.

  • Sensitivity and neurodevelopmental traits: Exploring links between sensitivity, emotion regulation, attention, and social functioning.

Mechanisms of sensitivity

Our work examines the neurobiological, developmental, and cognitive mechanisms underlying sensitivity, integrating brain-based, aetiological, and cognitive approaches.

Experiences of sensitivity in daily life and interventions

We translate our research into real-world contexts by studying how sensitivity shapes everyday experiences and by developing evidence-based interventions.

Sub-themes include:

  • Experiences in daily life: Qualitative research and ecological momentary assessment (EMA) studies capturing sensitivity in ecologically valid settings.

  • Interventions and applications: Development and evaluation of mindfulness-based programmes, arts-based beauty appreciation interventions, and coaching approaches to support sensitive individuals.

Research on ADHD

Alongside our sensitivity research, we conduct research on ADHD, including the positive sides, possible interventions, mechanisms and aetiologies.

  • Sub-themes include

    • Positive sides of ADHD: Studying strengths such as creativity

    • ADHD interventions: Developing and evaluating interventions, including mindfulness-based approaches, to support well-being and functioning

    • ADHD mechanisms and aetiologies: We conduct neuroscientific and behavioural genetic research
